2012 - A Scientific Reality Check

Donald Yeomans
Donald Yeomans

There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there… So here is the scientific reality on the celestial happenings in the year 2012.

Nibiru, a purported large object headed toward Earth, simply put - does not exist. There is no credible evidence - telescopic or otherwise - for this object’s existence. There is also no evidence of any kind for its gravitational effects upon bodies in our solar system.

I do however like the name Nibiru. If I ever get a pet goldflish (and I just may do that sometime in early 2013), Nibiru will be at the top of my list.

The Mayan calendar does not end in December 2012. Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period, but then – just as your calendar begins again on January 1 - another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

The Galileo spacecraft's view of the Moon and Earth
On December 16, 1992, 8 days after its encounter with Earth, the Galileo spacecraft looked back from a distance of about 6.2 million kilometers (3.9 million miles) to capture this remarkable view of the Moon in orbit about Earth. Image credit: NASA/JPL

There are no credible predictions for worrisome astronomical events in 2012. The activity of the sun is cyclical with a period of roughly 11 years and the time of the next solar maximum is predicted to occur about May 2013. However, the Earth routinely experiences these periods of increased solar activity – for eons - without worrisome effects. The Earth’s magnetic field, which deflects charged particles from the sun, does reverse polarity on time scales of about 400,000 years but there is no evidence that a reversal, which takes thousands of years to occur, will begin in 2012. Even if this several thousand year-long magnetic field reversal were to begin, that would not affect the Earth’s rotation nor would it affect the direction of the Earth’s rotation axis… only Superman can do that.

The only important gravitational tugs experienced by the Earth are due to the moon and sun. There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and Sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

The predictions of doomsday or dramatic changes on December 21, 2012 are all false. Incorrect doomsday predictions have taken place several times in each of the past several centuries. Readers should bear in mind what Carl Sagan noted several years ago; “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”

For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, the burden of proof is on the people making these claims. Where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and all the passionate, persistent and profitable assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

For more information on the silliness surrounding December 2012, see:

having heard about periodic wobbles to the earth,If the north &south poles ice caps totally melted could that disturb the balance of the earths rotation.

    JPL geophysicist Richard Gross responds:

The Earth rotates about its axis once a day, but does not do so uniformly. Instead, the rate of rotation varies by up to a millisecond per day. Like a spinning ice skater whose speed of rotation increases as the skater’s arms are brought closer to the body, the speed of the Earth’s rotation will increase if its mass is brought closer to its axis of rotation.

Conversely, the speed of the Earth’s rotation will decrease if its mass is moved away from the rotation axis. Melting ice that is grounded on land, like mountain glaciers and the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, will change the Earth’s rotation only if the meltwater flows into the oceans. If the meltwater remains close to its source, by being trapped in a glacier lake for example, then there is no net movement of mass away from the glacier or ice sheet, and the Earth’s rotation won’t change. But if the meltwater flows into the oceans and is dispersed, then there is a net movement of mass and the Earth’s rotation will change. For example, if the Greenland ice sheet were to completely melt and the meltwater were to completely flow into the oceans, then global sea level would rise by about 7 meters (23 feet) and the Earth would rotate slower, with the length of the day being longer by a few milliseconds than it is today.

Ice that is floating in water, such as the Arctic ice cap, does not change sea level as it melts and hence does not change the Earth’s rotation.

I DO HOPE I do not doubt for a moment that your facts are accurate and 100% persuasive to the extent that no one should doubt the rising of the Sun on December 22, 2012. But may I ask a fair question to help guide us all in the future? In a world where so many people adhere to a large portion of “Life’s Social Rules & Conventions” out of tradition, personal obligation and a desire to live in an orderly environment where one can rely upon both BIG and Not-So-Big responsibilities being kept (i.e. paying of bills, issuing valid checks, reporting to work, maintaining property and yard, driving conscientiously, leaving a gratuity for the foodserver, not firing bullets into the air when The NY Yankees won The Series, etc.). If a celestial body (a true “planet killer”) were hurtling toward Earth and its destructive path could not have been predicted, under what conditions would NASA or any governmental agency REVEAL THIS FACT? (particularly 3 years early?). What purpose would be served in the name of this doomsday revelation? One could easily and persuasively argue that only “harm” would be served by NASA’s potential disclosure. Surely, any possible Earth Escape would be for a small, specialized group and that fact … that Planetary Hail Mary Mission would be the most closely guarded secret in the history of mankind; requring all nature of denials and disinformation by every authoratative agency possible - undoubtedly lead by NASA itself. A Conspiratorial Catch-22. Ironic, ain’t it?

The post above, from me, begins with an elegantly moronic sentence fragment. The opening half-sentence was typed very quickly when I went back to add a few thoughts - I really duffed out. It should read:

I DO HOPE THAT NASA MODERATORS HAVE THE COURAGE TO POST THIS COMMENT. It is a “rug-puller” I know but even NASA would be best served to open their own can of worms.

I love NASA and what they represent - I always have and I hope I’m never given reason to change that feeling. They are, truly, heroes (not just the astronauts … but especially the men and women who devote sometimes 20 years to a project - never knowing what the eventual outcome will be!).

Me being an autistic person kind of puts some fear in me that the world will end in 2012. I’m glad that NASA and a team of some of the smartest people in the world are proving the doomsdayers wrong. Ever since I watched an episode of Rugrats when I was 7 or 8 years old, I was always afraid of the end of the world. That Rugrats episode depicted the sky falling to end the world. But the sky can’t really fall since it’s nothing but a mix of water, moisture, carbon dioxide, and oxygen. And whatever else forms it. Anyway I know that the atmosphere is at least 3 billion years old. The asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs 65 million years ago was the end of the world for that time period. The end of the world PERMANENTLY if nothing else happens should be 3 billion years from now when the sun runs out of energy. Armagedon to the human mind is actually a kayfabe end of humanity. Truth is we don’t know when the world will end. Neither does the ancient Mayans. I don’t know when it will end. Certainly not 12/21/2012. So don’t drink “that last Budweiser” (or if you don’t drink like me “that last Mountain Dew”) and don’t put off that Holiday shopping. I think we’ll be around to see humans return to the moon before the next decade is out. I’ll be glad when this 2012 outburst is over. If the Mayans say that peace will rein over all mankind in 2012 they may be right about that. The Price Is Right will still be the same on 12/22/2012 as it will be on 12/21/2012. That said let’s hope like the last few doomsday prophecies it’s all wrong. I don’t think the world is ending myself. It’s all that stuff people watch on the news. And this 2012 scare is also part of what is hurting the economy. I don’t like talking about things like this. Because this is a sensitive subject. I feel like I have to talk to a bunch of teenagers to get this off my chest. But since this is a government funded website I guess that’s okay. I will close on this. But as a Christian I say, only God knows when the world will end. And don’t eat that last super yet.

I mean come on now, why spread false panic. The discovery channel even jumped on the band wagon with a foolish(nice special effects tho) 1 hour film called 2012 apocalypse, which seemed more like an advertisement for the 2012 move.
Thank you Nasa for taking your valuable time to set the facts straight, what is upsetting to me is when I read about these chidren that get the crap scared out of them. Some advocates for the 2012 catastrophe say that what will actually cause the devastation is an alignment of planets. There is no planet alignment on the winter solstice in 2012. Nonetheless, advocates of doom connect the fictional alignment to astrological predictions or groundless claims about a reversal of Earth’s magnetic field and unprecedented solar storms. “Many internet postings and guests on all-night apocalyptic radio have elaborated on these themes.

In particular, several threads of irrational thought have created an internet phantom, the secret planet Nibiru. It’s the bowling ball, and Earth is the pin. There is no such planet, though it is often equated with Eris, a plutoid orbiting safely and permanently beyond Pluto. Some insist, however, that a NASA conspiracy is in play and that Nibiru, looming in on the approach, can already be seen in broad daylight from the Southern Hemisphere. It was supposed to become visible from the Northern Hemisphere, too, by last May, but like a fickle blind date, it stood up those awaiting it.”
please tell me,what is this? I’m so confused!

The amount of energy an asteroid releases when it enters Earth’s atmosphere depends on its mass and speed. On average, an asteroid would have to be over 30 meters (99 feet) before its energy would affect things on the ground.

Being a researcher, I still don’t understand the theory how pole will shift, how earth will start rotating reverse and how will magnetic fields would change ? I mean why this will happen ? any scientific reason? What i believe is we have made this earth to live in somany years so it can not be destroyed by one stroke.I think that the only thing that can destroy everything is the Global warming because we can see that due this almost all the coastal countries like indonesia, malasiya, andaman and nikobar. bangladesh are slowely going down inside the sea. so instead of pulling a nonsense thread we have to do something to fight against this challenge. I don’t know whether a cosmic phenomenon will destroy us or not but if we don’t take major steps against global warming this will surely do, pretty soon.

What about 4179 Toutatis (1989 AC)? Isn’t that supposed to show up in Dec 2012? Its large enough to kill 1/4 of the planet. Couldn’t it run into a small meteor, altering its orbit slightly? That may be a stretch, but it is interesting the largest known PHA/NEO will be in the neighborhood on Dec 2012.

    Don Yeomans responds:

Randy, Toutatis will pass within 18 lunar distances (4.3 million miles) of the Earth on December 12, 2012, but that is not considered a particularly close approach and there is absolutely no threat to Earth. Note: the only Near-Earth object to come within 10 lunar distances in the Dec. 2012 timeframe is asteroid 2009 BS5. This small asteroid will safely fly past Earth at a distance of 8.5 lunar distances (2.0 million miles) on Dec. 11, 2011.

    on the following address:

    http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012-guest.html

There is a beautiful post with the heading: The Great 2012 Doomsday Scare. That post ends with the words quoted by the above person. It was nothing more than a rosy end to the post, call it sarcasm. In other words, the person explained with plenty of detail how there is nothing wrong with the year, the eccentricities of the Mayan calendar which do in no way or form end in the year 2012 (actually an entry is read from the year 4772), and many other fascinating details about the Mayans, people who have written about apocalypse in recent decades as far back as the 70s -if I recall correctly-, and etc.

In my humble opinion, certain individuals should read fact, avoid fiction if they are not equipped to handle it, and lastly, understand that there are people out there not trying to do you harm, but trying to make a dime out of fifteen cents… even if those cents require a white lie at its premise. The end of human beings is to live; the means to get there are vast and often treacherous to those who stumble upon them.

  29. Wil Says:

To Swarnali a few posts above.

The premise of the message you are referencing merely explains that there are people on the internet posting lies about the year 2012 in order to:
    a) Make a name for themselves
    b) Make Money (writing books, filming million-dollar films, etc.)
    c) Try to get your monetary donations by calling you to the nearest ancestral power (God/Goddess).
    d) Etcetera.

Nibiru is only a name, that call it science fiction fanatics, created in order to make the less-educated few of society believe a lie. That lie being that there is a rogue planet out there flying through space (some 4 billion miles actually) and it’s headed straight for us! It will take our most recent state-of-the-art technology about 35 years to reach the vicinity of Pluto and this wonderful Nibiru, this science fiction mass of who-knows-what will take 2 years; that’s amazing even by the standards of space movies featuring warp jumps or black hole-to- black hole jumping.

Don ‘t be confused, the real mass is called Eris and it lies peacefully 4 billion miles away in the outer solar system.

2012 was good entertainment, based on the credible idea about the earth’s core heating up from massive neutrino flux caused by a super violent solar flare, thereby resulting in a rotational shift of the earths crust.
But, again this is Hollywood with its modern awesome special effects.

No doubt, the potential dangers lurking around us such as NEO’s (asteroids, etc.), and of course the even more real dangers from terrorism and national conflict with nuclear and biological WMD - all make for good fictional box-office entertainment.

Then, as if this isn’t enough, maybe we should be concerned about the immoral state of the world and what might be coming at us in the near future.

Hollywood has a real competitor for sobering us up: We don’t see much about it on the liberal-controlled media that spoon feeds us the nightly news.

If anyone cares and does some unbiased research, facts stranger than Hollywood fiction are available to be pondered upon.

Real signs are coming upon the world making true what was said 2000 years ago “that even the very stones will cry out”.

Following the discovery of the planet Neptune in 1846, there was considerable speculation that another planet might exist beyond its orbit. The search began in the mid-19th century but culminated at the start of the 20th with Percival Lowell’s quest for Planet X. Lowell proposed the Planet X hypothesis to explain apparent discrepancies in the orbits of the gas giants, particularly Uranus and Neptune, speculating that the gravity of a large unseen ninth planet could have perturbed Uranus enough to account for the irregularities.lyde Tombaugh’s discovery of Pluto in 1930 appeared to validate Lowell’s hypothesis, and Pluto was officially considered the ninth planet until 2006. In 1978, however, Pluto was found to be too small for its gravity to affect the gas giants, resulting in a brief search for a tenth planet. something to think about !!!!!!!

  32. tom Says:
    November 24th, 2009 at 5:19 am

Today, the astronomical community widely agrees that Planet X, as originally envisioned, does not exist. However, the concept of Planet X has been revived by a number of astronomers to explain other anomalies observed in the outer Solar System. In popular culture, and even among some astronomers,[5] Planet X has become a stand-in term for any undiscovered planet in the outer Solar System, regardless of its relationship to Lowell’s hypothesis. Other trans-Neptunian planets have also been suggested, based on different evidence.

There are so many things being said at the moment that no one knows what to believe…all i know is i goofed up and watched the 2012 movie that is already out on dvd and it terrified me, i cried allnite and lost sleep because i sat in the room with my children and watched them sleep. This has affected me ever since, i think ive heard something different on just about every show ive attempted to watch about this topic. I always believed that “mankind” would be the end to this planet because of war or pollution or religious beliefs, sadly enough, everyone has a higher power that they believe in, so i don’t understand why that has to be a factor. Ive come to notice that humans are selfish and most of them lazy, but im getting on a soapbox and off the subject. So, primarily i was wondering about the eclipses on that day? What i would give for a peice of mind and to go to bed and wake up with out having to think about 2012, i realize there is nothing we can do if it’s true but i would like to know whats true and whats bs…thanks:)

There are many many ways human’s can die off but the only way I think this will happen is by our own hand. The proof of that is right in front of us look at all the hipe this 2012 caused all it will take is the right story. You ever play the game grapevine were you wisper a story in someone’s ear and have it pass on and at the end you hear what the end result is the public is the same way………………..COME ON PEOPLE WISE UP.

I hadn’t heard anything about an alignment on 21dec’12 until a friend called and was all concerned… so I took out the handy-dandy planet position calculator (based on USNO VanFlanderin’s work) and dialed in that date… and didn’t find much of an alignment, ie, at that time: Sun will just be entering Cap; Mer in mid Sag; Ven in early Sag, Mar about to enter Cap; Jup in late Gem; Sat in early Sco; Ur in early Ari; Nep in early Pis and Pl at mid Cap, ie, other than Jup, yes the other planets are in one 90deg area of the sky… but that doesn’t make much of an alignment in my book.

thank you for clearing a lot of things up.
i was absolutely petrified when my boyfriend told me that the world will end in 2012, he said he looked at a nasa website, but i’m now thinking he was probably looking at a “fake NASA news release” website or something like that. and the movie 2012 also terrified me. its sickening how people make money out of people’s fear by making movies and books.
even if it was true, i think we all should just continue living life to the full.

If you are afraid there might be some truth to all the 2012 nonsense, then spend some time learing about astronomy and you will be much relieved. In fact one of the best things NASA could do is post or sponser a basic astronomy educational series either on the web or on the HIstory or Discovery channel.

A good attempt by Donald Yeomans, but flawed by two faulty assertions:

    (1) “Nibiru, a purported large object headed toward Earth, simply put - does not exist. There is no credible evidence - telescopic or otherwise - for this object’s existence.”

++ Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The implication that every such large object headed toward Earth would have been detected with certainty, is unsupported by fact.

    (2) “there is no evidence that a reversal, which takes thousands of years to occur”

++ There is in fact no evidence that a reversal takes thousands of years to occur — on the contrary, the Glatzmaier-Roberts model (1995) suggests a much shorter amount of time.

    Don,

Thank you very much for the clear and concise “Reality Check”. I was a little disturbed by a program aired by the History Channel about a year ago or so; the program tried to tie several different world-ending predictions together, and seemed to make them all point to 12/21/2112. To my recollection, it included references to the Mayan calendar, the I-ching, and Nostradamus. I found it interesting, but wondered how much truth there was behind it all.

If the program was accurate regarding it’s representation of the I-ching, it’s a pretty amazing coincidence that the relative measurement of “quality of life” drops off the chart on 12/21/2112, but I believe that’s all it is. Of course, given the rest of the program’s contents, I question whether or not they were just playing to the sensational aspect of the topic and trying to tie the three together.

    Anyway, thanks again.
    -Jason

Say science says all these things won’t happen, clearly NASA believes this is true. In the event that Science would be wrong and something out of the ordinary would happen, i mean science is still very young, also the field of astronomy is quite young as well. We can only predict what can happen sure science gives us a clearer insight to what these celestial events might bare and cause for the earth. My concern is whether our not out governments would swallow their pride and let us know in time so that many of us who have the ability to make preparations do so. Yes, so they would cause a bit of panic but it’s our governments responsibility to warn it’s citizens on what we should expect if there is such an event. I just hope that the world changes and the right decisions are made for the people, so that if something bad were to happen we would all have a fighting chance not just those people at the top that make all the decisions.

Dont worry, there is no 2012 end of the world date.
With all this stars, and planets and this vast and deep never ending space, You should only worry about how all these things are hanging in place and balance.

What is the mystery behind all of this ? It has to be an intelligent design. No Questions.
And according to Intelligent design or GOD, there is no such event in the Bible. So Relax.

Yes, I know Scientists or science minded folks want Scientifc proof of such things. But, Who made the “Science” as the true barometer for anything . It was scientists. So does not sound too fair in that regard.

Example - IF a father builds a Lego Model of something and show to his child, saying here follow these instructions. I have it figured out and written it here. BUt the child being adamant does not really follow the book, but tries to explore ( thats his nature), and build his way, breaks it, builds it again, cry, evetually come close to what the model is suppsed to look like. Then he says Voila - I did it. I think i know how it is done now. I see a pattern. etc etc. WHAT THE CHILD DID IS DEFINED AS SCIENCE. WHAT WAS ALREADY MADE BY HIS FATHER WAS CLASSIFIED AS RELIGION.

So yes Science is awesome, but it has its limitations. And to answer some of the worries here - there is no 2012. Only worrry about- do you know the true Living God - Jesus Christ ?

Because according to the Bible, there will be an End Time. And I hope you have your Passports stamped and ready when the time comes. Bad News - It will happen. Good News- It is easy to get the passport stamped ( No, you dont need 1 million/Billion Euros to get on that ship, like the 2012 movie).

Does the quote “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence” apply to global warming also? I hear that the oceans will swell and we will all die in just a few years. Certainly an extraordinary claim with NO extraordinary evidence other than AlGore’s rants (and financial interest).

In reality the chance of the world ending tomarrow is the same as it is Dec 12 -2012. The real danger is the mass histeria this kind of talk stirs up. Because the vast majority of the population is so poorly informed by the media, that they base their personal theorys on the doomsday garbage they see on tv.

I don’t think the gov or nasa would tell us anything it would cause hurt pain and suffering If there was a chance of world end of any sort to keep from panic. but if there was a solar flair or any colide with earth there would be no exscape no rocket or space craft would be able to fly far enuff away to avoid disaster it would take 20 to 30 years to be far enuff away for a solar flare or a planet collide not to efect any space craft. i say just enjoy life and your family and enjoy what little or lot of time we have because if such an end. there is nothing that we can do except what we already do every day.

Just like the “Good Book” says… You’ll know NOT the hour or the day.
So I agree Mr Yeomans, and am SO glad there are SCIENTISTS out there coming forward and letting people KNOW that all this is Doo doo. Also, it should be noted that the Myan’s probably shouldn’t be our “guide to doomsday”. Considering their “doomsday” couldn’t hold off until this 2012 crap.

The world could end tomorrow.I do not believe any predictions are credible. However Global Warming could certatinly hasten it but not in 2 years.100 yrs? Possible.Truly Nostradamus has been wrong before and as for the Mayans their prediction was made 2 thousand years ago with archaic methods.Had they had our modern methods their prediction would probably be different.

Sorry, science doesn’t work that way. You can’t claim something to be true (scaring off ignorant people in the course of it) just because nobody can prove you wrong.

If you need attention, do some good in the world, help a lesser man, stop making estimations that start from the conclusion instead of the observation; you’re thinking is not unique and actually fits with many people’s factless brains.

Saying that, you’re insulting science as a whole, and I’m already regretting the time wasted getting this off my chest.

All the authors or book writers and publishers, will become very rich.
Citizen of the world, nothing will happned. If the world is going to end on the above date, then why write books,to make money. Then the only money you will need, is enought to last you until Dec 21 20012. ( Why write and publish books to make millions, when Dec 21 2012 is just a little over 2 years from now.You dont need millions)

I just say one thing to say…

Until 2004 the Nasa did not even know about the astroid Apophis and some people on this world already knew this.

Also untill now you cannot even predict its path maybe its impact will be on 2012, 2029 or 2036 maybe it will not impact at all.

So maybe there is another danger and not only the planet Nibiru.
