2012 – A Scientific Reality Check

Donald Yeomans

There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there… So here is the scientific reality on the celestial happenings in the year 2012.

Nibiru, a purported large object headed toward Earth, simply put - does not exist. There is no credible evidence - telescopic or otherwise - for this object’s existence. There is also no evidence of any kind for its gravitational effects upon bodies in our solar system.

I do however like the name Nibiru. If I ever get a pet goldflish (and I just may do that sometime in early 2013), Nibiru will be at the top of my list.

The Mayan calendar does not end in December 2012. Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period, but then – just as your calendar begins again on January 1 - another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

The Galileo spacecraft's view of the Moon and Earth

There are no credible predictions for worrisome astronomical events in 2012. The activity of the sun is cyclical with a period of roughly 11 years and the time of the next solar maximum is predicted to occur about May 2013. However, the Earth routinely experiences these periods of increased solar activity – for eons - without worrisome effects. The Earth’s magnetic field, which deflects charged particles from the sun, does reverse polarity on time scales of about 400,000 years but there is no evidence that a reversal, which takes thousands of years to occur, will begin in 2012. Even if this several thousand year-long magnetic field reversal were to begin, that would not affect the Earth’s rotation nor would it affect the direction of the Earth’s rotation axis… only Superman can do that.

The only important gravitational tugs experienced by the Earth are due to the moon and sun. There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and Sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

The predictions of doomsday or dramatic changes on December 21, 2012 are all false. Incorrect doomsday predictions have taken place several times in each of the past several centuries. Readers should bear in mind what Carl Sagan noted several years ago; “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.”

For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, the burden of proof is on the people making these claims. Where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and all the passionate, persistent and profitable assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Given all the “real scientific evidence”, the Doomsday 2012 people are full of cow manure, & playing “Chicken Little”, for no good reason @ all.

having heard about periodic wobbles to the earth,If the north &south poles ice caps totally melted could that disturb the balance of the earths rotation.

    JPL geophysicist Richard Gross responds:

The Earth rotates about its axis once a day, but does not do so uniformly. Instead, the rate of rotation varies by up to a millisecond per day. Like a spinning ice skater whose speed of rotation increases as the skater’s arms are brought closer to the body, the speed of the Earth’s rotation will increase if its mass is brought closer to its axis of rotation.

Conversely, the speed of the Earth’s rotation will decrease if its mass is moved away from the rotation axis. Melting ice that is grounded on land, like mountain glaciers and the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, will change the Earth’s rotation only if the meltwater flows into the oceans. If the meltwater remains close to its source, by being trapped in a glacier lake for example, then there is no net movement of mass away from the glacier or ice sheet, and the Earth’s rotation won’t change. But if the meltwater flows into the oceans and is dispersed, then there is a net movement of mass and the Earth’s rotation will change. For example, if the Greenland ice sheet were to completely melt and the meltwater were to completely flow into the oceans, then global sea level would rise by about 7 meters (23 feet) and the Earth would rotate slower, with the length of the day being longer by a few milliseconds than it is today.

Ice that is floating in water, such as the Arctic ice cap, does not change sea level as it melts and hence does not change the Earth’s rotation.

People who make “End of the world” claims should always be ridiculed. After all they will never have a chance to gloat.

This “rumor” has been propagated by idiots trying to make a name for themselves. Just like the “black hole” CERN will produce, or the H1N1 virus scare (invented by politicians and bureaucrats, only to justify their jobs, cause a panic and multiply the drug companies’ already exorbitant profits). If U buy in all that garbage, I have a nice tower situated in Paris that I want to get off my hands!!!!!

I DO HOPE I do not doubt for a moment that your facts are accurate and 100% persuasive to the extent that no one should doubt the rising of the Sun on December 22, 2012. But may I ask a fair question to help guide us all in the future? In a world where so many people adhere to a large portion of “Life’s Social Rules & Conventions” out of tradition, personal obligation and a desire to live in an orderly environment where one can rely upon both BIG and Not-So-Big responsibilities being kept (i.e. paying of bills, issuing valid checks, reporting to work, maintaining property and yard, driving conscientiously, leaving a gratuity for the foodserver, not firing bullets into the air when The NY Yankees won The Series, etc.). If a celestial body (a true “planet killer”) were hurtling toward Earth and its destructive path could not have been predicted, under what conditions would NASA or any governmental agency REVEAL THIS FACT? (particularly 3 years early?). What purpose would be served in the name of this doomsday revelation? One could easily and persuasively argue that only “harm” would be served by NASA’s potential disclosure. Surely, any possible Earth Escape would be for a small, specialized group and that fact … that Planetary Hail Mary Mission would be the most closely guarded secret in the history of mankind; requring all nature of denials and disinformation by every authoratative agency possible - undoubtedly lead by NASA itself. A Conspiratorial Catch-22. Ironic, ain’t it?

The post above, from me, begins with an elegantly moronic sentence fragment. The opening half-sentence was typed very quickly when I went back to add a few thoughts - I really duffed out. It should read:

I DO HOPE THAT NASA MODERATORS HAVE THE COURAGE TO POST THIS COMMENT. It is a “rug-puller” I know but even NASA would be best served to open their own can of worms.

I love NASA and what they represent - I always have and I hope I’m never given reason to change that feeling. They are, truly, heroes (not just the astronauts … but especially the men and women who devote sometimes 20 years to a project - never knowing what the eventual outcome will be!).

Me being an autistic person kind of puts some fear in me that the world will end in 2012. I’m glad that NASA and a team of some of the smartest people in the world are proving the doomsdayers wrong. Ever since I watched an episode of Rugrats when I was 7 or 8 years old, I was always afraid of the end of the world. That Rugrats episode depicted the sky falling to end the world. But the sky can’t really fall since it’s nothing but a mix of water, moisture, carbon dioxide, and oxygen. And whatever else forms it. Anyway I know that the atmosphere is at least 3 billion years old. The asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs 65 million years ago was the end of the world for that time period. The end of the world PERMANENTLY if nothing else happens should be 3 billion years from now when the sun runs out of energy. Armagedon to the human mind is actually a kayfabe end of humanity. Truth is we don’t know when the world will end. Neither does the ancient Mayans. I don’t know when it will end. Certainly not 12/21/2012. So don’t drink “that last Budweiser” (or if you don’t drink like me “that last Mountain Dew”) and don’t put off that Holiday shopping. I think we’ll be around to see humans return to the moon before the next decade is out. I’ll be glad when this 2012 outburst is over. If the Mayans say that peace will rein over all mankind in 2012 they may be right about that. The Price Is Right will still be the same on 12/22/2012 as it will be on 12/21/2012. That said let’s hope like the last few doomsday prophecies it’s all wrong. I don’t think the world is ending myself. It’s all that stuff people watch on the news. And this 2012 scare is also part of what is hurting the economy. I don’t like talking about things like this. Because this is a sensitive subject. I feel like I have to talk to a bunch of teenagers to get this off my chest. But since this is a government funded website I guess that’s okay. I will close on this. But as a Christian I say, only God knows when the world will end. And don’t eat that last super yet.

I for one love a good sci fi/ disaster film, but when morons feel the need to put up fake websites and try to pass fiction as fact then that crosses the line. I mean come on now, why spread false panic. The discovery channel even jumped on the band wagon with a foolish(nice special effects tho) 1 hour film called 2012 apocalypse, which seemed more like an advertisement for the 2012 move.
Thank you Nasa for taking your valuable time to set the facts straight, what is upsetting to me is when I read about these chidren that get the crap scared out of them. What would be fitting and just is that since NASA has to dispell these myths and scientific inaccuracies concerning 2012 is that any profits from movies, fake websites, and so called psychics should go to Nasa.

all this prediction is based on biblical stories or individual hallucination.

Excellent debunking NASA. I must apologise for the fact that I did go and see the movie 2012, and I have to say… what a load of scientific guff - while a great action movie (suspense, drama and romance with heady music), it is movies like this that frighten the general population into a fear of science and scientists. Personally, two minutes into the movie and I was cracking up laughing at the “mutating neutrinos”. Sadly, people will readily believe a movie over fact. This movie should come with a warning!

Some advocates for the 2012 catastrophe say that what will actually cause the devastation is an alignment of planets. There is no planet alignment on the winter solstice in 2012. Nonetheless, advocates of doom connect the fictional alignment to astrological predictions or groundless claims about a reversal of Earth’s magnetic field and unprecedented solar storms. “Many internet postings and guests on all-night apocalyptic radio have elaborated on these themes.

In particular, several threads of irrational thought have created an internet phantom, the secret planet Nibiru. It’s the bowling ball, and Earth is the pin. There is no such planet, though it is often equated with Eris, a plutoid orbiting safely and permanently beyond Pluto. Some insist, however, that a NASA conspiracy is in play and that Nibiru, looming in on the approach, can already be seen in broad daylight from the Southern Hemisphere. It was supposed to become visible from the Northern Hemisphere, too, by last May, but like a fickle blind date, it stood up those awaiting it.”
please tell me,what is this? I’m so confused!
